What exhaust smoke can tell you

  • Blue smoke often means oil is being burned
  • Black smoke often means too much fuel
  • White smoke can be coolant, or just condensation on a cold start

The four things an engine needs

A petrol engine needs air, fuel, spark and compression, at the right time. Most running faults trace back to one of those: a blocked filter or air leak, a fuel delivery problem, an ignition fault, or a loss of compression from worn parts. Diagnosis means working out which one has failed.

Symptoms and where we look first

  • Hard starting: battery, starter, fuel delivery or ignition
  • Rough idle: spark plugs, coils, air leaks or sensors
  • Loss of power: air filter, fuel supply, sensors or exhaust restriction
  • Overheating: coolant level, radiator fan, thermostat, water pump or radiator
  • Oil leaks: gaskets such as the valve cover or oil pan, or seals
  • Knocking or ticking: low oil, worn parts or incorrect fuel

Overheating deserves quick attention

Driving an overheating engine can damage the head gasket and other parts. If the temperature warning appears, pull over safely and stop. Do not open the radiator cap while hot.

What a major engine repair involves

A major repair such as an overhaul usually means taking parts apart, measuring wear and replacing what is out of limits. It is a significant job, so we explain what we find and what it would take before you agree. We handle complete engine overhauls.

Preventing expensive engine damage

  • Service on schedule, and keep oil and coolant at the right levels
  • Replace timing belts at the interval in your manual
  • Fix oil and coolant leaks early
  • Do not ignore warning lights

Compression and leak-down tests

If an engine loses power, a compression test measures how well each cylinder holds pressure. A leak-down test goes further, showing where pressure escapes, such as past the piston rings, the valves or the head gasket. These tests help decide between a minor repair and a major one, and they prevent guesswork.

The cooling system explained

Coolant circulates through the engine and radiator. The thermostat controls when coolant flows to the radiator, the water pump moves the coolant, and the fan pulls air through the radiator in slow traffic. A failure in any one of these can cause overheating. Because summer heat in Lahore is so high, the cooling system is under the most strain between April and June.

Timing belts and chains

A timing belt or chain keeps the engine valves and pistons moving in sync. Belts have a replacement interval in the manual, and failure can cause serious engine damage. Chains last longer but can stretch, and a rattle at startup is a warning. We check which your car has and what your manual says.

Signs of a head gasket problem

  • White smoke from the exhaust that does not clear
  • Coolant level that keeps dropping with no visible leak
  • Milky or creamy residue under the oil filler cap
  • Overheating
  • Bubbles in the coolant

Oil pressure and the oil warning light

If the oil pressure warning light comes on while driving, stop safely and switch off the engine. Low oil pressure can damage an engine in a short time. Check the oil level and call us before you restart.

Frequently asked questions

My engine is overheating. What should I do?

Pull over safely, switch off the engine and let it cool. Do not open the radiator cap while hot. Then have the cause checked.

Do you do full engine overhauls?

Yes. We handle complete engine overhauls. Contact us with your car details.

How do I know if my engine is burning oil?

Blue exhaust smoke and a falling oil level are common signs.

Is a ticking noise serious?

It can be a minor issue or low oil. Check the oil level first and get it checked if it continues.

Do you replace timing belts?

Call us on 0300 9406506 with your car details and we will advise.

Is a timing belt change optional?

No. It is a scheduled item, and failure can cause major engine damage.

Can I drive with a small oil leak?

Keep the oil level checked and have the leak found soon.
